Royal Copenhagen Small 1981 Annual Mug Danish Gifts Presents Ceramic Pottery Vintage Retro
Royal Copenhagen Fajance 1981 Mug.
This is a small mug. It is 7.5cm high.
It was made by Royal Copenhagen in Denmark in 1981.
It was designed by Ellen Malmer, a Danish potter who worked for Royal Copenhagen from 1965 to 1988 during which time she had her own exhibitions. Since leaving Royal Copenhagen she has focused on paper collages and textiles.
It is in excellent vintage condition.
Royal Copenhagen produced an annual mug every year from 1967 to 2014. The annual mug came in two sizes. The small is like a large espresso or small tea or coffee cup and it is dishwasher proof so suitable for everyday use. The large is more of a tankard, intended as a display piece and has a circular silver disk on its base, some of which were engraved and are often polished out on resale. The small mugs are 7.5cm high and the large mugs are 12cm high.
Each year Royal Copenhagen commissioned a different designer to design the annual mugs. Both sizes had exactly the same design. Both sizes make excellent gifts for a person to mark their year of birth. From 1967 to 1994 the mugs were made of Faience (Fajance in Danish) which is a traditional pottery technique of tin-glazed earthenware that Royal Copenhagen excelled at in the Mid Century period. From 1995 the mugs were made of porcelain which enabled brighter, coloured designs.
Note that we have attempted to show and state the condition as accurately as possible but this is a pre-loved, vintage item and some minor signs of age and/or use are to be expected.
