Rewire and refurbishment of 4 vintage table lamps as follows:
French White Porcelain Lamp
- Replacement of lamp holder with white plastic B22 including conversion from 10mm to 1/2 inch
- Re-attachment of brass cover with lamp fitting.
- Filing of sharp metal cable exit hole on the inside to smooth it and insertion of plastic grommet to to protect the cable from rubbing against the metal.
- Refurbishment of vintage brown Bakelite switch. This included adding an internal strain relief as a safety enhancement, and soldering the cable ends as the internal switch terminals were too small to accommodate modern cable doubled over to securely fix it in place.
- Rewire with Italian-made dark blue braided fabric cable and a white UK plug.
Parts & Labour = £50
French Brass Lamp
- This one took more work than all the others put together!
- It was not only metric, but used a thread type had never come across before which was also extremely short, making work extremely tricky.
- The different thread meant that I had to recondition and re-use the existing lamp holder as there are no modern lamp holders that fitted.
- The existing lamp holder was not capable of being earthed and did not have a switch, so I had to custom retro-earth the lamp and put a switch on the cable.
- I ordered parts to earth it, and also added plastic grommets and isolators as a safety enhancement.
- Due to the short thread and lamp design (the cable just comes out of the bottom rather than through a hole like the other lamps), I had to custom fit a plastic strain relief to the underside (strain reliefs are safety enhancements designed to prevent live cable being yanked out of the lamp thereby possibly causing electric shocks). I actually re-purposed a fitting I use in my day job of installing broadcasting equipment at football grounds, but as you will see from the photo it fits perfectly!
- I rewired it with Italian-made black cable, a white UK plug and I added a black switch on the cable. I couldn't re-use the gold torpedo switch as it couldn't be earthed.
Parts & Labour = £60
2 X Brown Ceramic Lamps
- These were straight-forward rewires with earthed Italian braided cable and new in line switches but used the more expensive British-made metal E27 lamp holders. One of the lamps had a 1/2 inch thread for the lamp holder. This was replaced with a 10mm instead.
- The smaller square lamp used dark brown cable, an aged brass lamp holder and a black switch.
- The larger oval lamp used gold cable, a traditional brass lamp holder and a gold switch.
- Both lamps had strain reliefs fitted.
- Both lamps had white UK plugs fitted.
Parts & Labour = (£60 x 2) £120
Grand Total = £230
Please Note: The two French lamps still use B22 lightbulbs, whereas the two ceramic lamps will use E27 lightbulbs. Both are UK-standard bulbs.
