Shattaline Green British 1970s Table Lamp.

Bright green lamp with orange and dark blue highlights.

This is one of the rarer colours this lamp was made in.

A British design from the 1960s (see below) that's become a mid century classic design.

Made in the 1960s/70s in the UK or Italy.

22cm high, including the white lamp fitting, and 9cm wide.

Excellent fully working vintage condition with only minor signs of age.

Rewired with new fittings including a choice of new lampholder (see below)

We offer a choice of lamp holder. Originally it would have had a switched B22 British lampholder but if sold internationally we can replace this with a E27 fitting and put an on/off switch on the cable.

You should choose the E27 fitting unless you are in a country that uses B22 lightbulbs (UK/IRE/AUS/NZ) and might want to use a vintage lampshade such as the fibreglass shades these originally came with.

We can fit a UK/Irish, European, North American or Aus/NZ plug.

** If used in the USA/100/110/120v we recommend using an energy saving/LED bulb. E26 bulbs should work but because they are 1mm smaller they should be fully turned to ensure they make contact with the fitting. This lamp will take a European type/size lampshade with a ring of 1.5 inches (3.6cm) or alternatively a lampshade that sits on the light bulb. Full details of lampshades can be found under FAQs.

Shattaline lamps were the result of an accidental discovery in Surrey, England by a retired army major, Lewen Tugwell, in the mid 1960s. He was a sculptor and inventor and was experimenting with sculptures using the relatively new and exciting material of polyester resin in a mould. When he added the catalyst to harden it, the resin instead cracked and he realised it produced an attractive effect. He started production in Surrey on lamps, tables and other products under the Shattaline name. Around 1970 production moved to Scotland and it is not known which models were produced there and within a few years the company ceased trading. My thanks to Mike Andrew, who worked at Shattaline in Surrey, for his research on the company and help.

The design proved very popular and Shattaline inspired other companies to produce similar style lamps at the time. This included UK homewares company BHS commissioning an Italian company, Prova, to manufacture lamps for them. Unless the lamp still retains its original label it is not possible to be certain which company produced a lamp. But they all date from the same period and capture the same cracked resin effect.
