Holmegaard Danish Princess Wine Beer Glasses 1960s.
Very large 20cm size. Set of six in original box. Handmade in Denmark.
Near mint excellent condition. Two still have their stickers. The box is a little bit bashed as can be seen in the photos.
The largest size Princess glasses were made in at 20cm tall. This size was called the beer glass and those designed for white wine were only 14cm tall. However, these days we have become accustomed to wine being served in larger glasses and this size would now be considered an averagely sized wine glass. As they are handmade there may be slight variances from glass to glass.
These absolutely gorgeous, very special handmade glasses, were designed by Danish architect Bent O Severin in 1957 for Danish glass house Kastrup Holmegaard. They have a delicate waist and stylish bubble in the stem. The labels reference the King of Denmark and as Denmark has had a queen since January 1972, we can be certain they were made before that date.
They are named ‘Princess’, presumably in honour of the Danish princess, now Queen, Margrethe. Princess Margarethe was 17 in 1957 and as Holmegaard has the royal warrant from the Danish court they may have been commissioned by the royal family for a special occasion such as the Princess’s debutante ball but we’re just speculating now! We guarantee you’ll feel like a Danish Prince or Princess if you sip some chilled Chablis from these stylish beauties!
Note that we have attempted to show and state the condition as accurately as possible but this is a pre-loved, vintage item and some minor signs of age and/or use are to be expected. There may also be slight variations in the colours shown due to lighting, the camera lens and the device the image is viewed through. Handmade items may have slight imperfections, such as air bubbles in glass, which add to their uniqueness and charm.
