Danish Frandsen Gold Ball Table Wall Lamp Enamel Magnetic Vintage Retro Light Atomic Era 1970s 1980s
Frandsen Ball Gold Danish Table Wall Lamp
Cool atomic era styling with a touch of luxe opulence!
Vintage gold magnetic metal table or wall lamp.
The label indicates that it is 24 carat gold plated. It seems that luxury gold-plated editions of their best selling lines was a bit of a thing among Danish lighting companies in the mid 1970s!
The ball lamp was designed by Benny Frandsen in 1968.
Made by ABO Randers, Denmark, in the 1970s/80s.
The enamel ball is connected by magnetism to its stand, enabling it be moved to direct the light as required.
The stand can be used as a base for a table lamp or attached to the wall as wall light. When removed from its stand the lamp can be hung from the ceiling as a small pendant light.
Approximately 15cm high and 10cm wide.
Fully working very good vintage condition with some signs of age and use as shown in the photos. This lamp is in unusually good condition for a lamp of its age.
It has a European plug but we can fit a British/Irish, Aus/NZ plug or American* plug. It takes a E14 SES bulb, maximum 40w.
*If used in the USA/100/110/120v we recommend using a low energy/LED bulb, maximum 7w. You can use a low cost E14>E12 adapter to enable it to take E12 bulbs, which are more easily available in North America although E14 bulbs should be available online.
Frandsen's 1968 design was probably influenced by Verner Panton's 1959 'Topan' Lamp. The Frandsen Ball was originally produced as a 18cm wide pendant and magnetic wall lamp in brown and orange, the fashionable colours of the day, The magnetic wall lamp, in particular, became extremely popular in Denmark in the 1970s/80s and most Danish homes would have had at least one. These days ball lamps are made by the Frandsen company in China, but back then they were made by several Scandinavian lighting companies.
Note that we have attempted to show and state the condition as accurately as possible but this is a pre-loved, vintage item and some minor signs of age and/or use are to be expected. There may also be slight variations in the colours shown due to lighting, the camera lens and the device the image is viewed through.
